Water supply has partially been restored to parts of the affected areas in Kariega earlier today however, a burst has occured on the 700mm main supply pipeline this afternoon.
The pipeline has been isolated and repairs have started. Additionally, a power failure affected pumping to the Rosedale area. The power has now been restored and water is being pumped to the area.
The areas below are affected by the burst pipe:
• Fairbridge Heights
• Strelitzia Park
• Winterhoek Park
• Vanes Estate
Furthermore, the areas below are expected to be without water supply from tomorrow morning, until the repair on the pipeline has been completed.
• Van Riebeekhoogte
• College Hill
• Kabah Phases 2 to 4
Pumping water supply to the Rosedale area will continue throughout the night although the following areas will experience water disruptions tomorrow while the reservoir fills up:
• Mountain View
• Thomas Gamble
• Allanridge West
• Kabah Phase 1
This situation will continue until the repair on the pipeline is completed.
The citywide water supply system remains under immense strain due to the high volume of water being used, especially after the extreme temperatures of the past week.
This means that reservoirs are being drained before the water level can rise to the level necessary to be able to provide water to all areas served by the reservoir. Many of the reservoirs have not recovered.
We urge residents who do have water supply to please reduce their water consumption to essential purposes such as drinking, cooking and personal hygiene.
The Metro has no option but to increase the drawdown from a number of local dams in an effort to accelerate the systems recovery and restore water to all areas.
This will result in a more rapid depletion of our dam levels, that have dropped to 18.59 percent over this weekend.
This is an emergency intervention and while it is not sustainable, not doing so increases the risk of more reservoirs running dry.
The only way to maintain a sustainable water supply across the City is to reduce our daily collective water consumption to below 230 million litres.
Water tankers have been deployed to the locations below to ensure residents have access to water. Efforts are being made to increase the number of tankers in Kariega.
1.Corner Errol Avenue & Van Riebeeck Street
2.Protea Street, Daniel Pienaar High School
3.Muir College School
4.Roaming in the Rosedale area
Regular updates will be sent as the situation changes.
The interventions listed above should result in water being restored in approximately 48 hours. We apologise for inconvenience caused.
